I have over a decade experience in babysitting and a majority of that are with family member’s children, whose ages range from infant to 16 years of age. I take them out for walks or strolls around the neighborhood, or to the park to play at the near by playground. I change diapers when needed and love to play games with them. If their parents ask me to do specific activities with them I will, such as reading a book or three. Rarely do I put them to bed myself but if needed, I have everyone brush their teeth, use the bathroom, tuck them in, and wait for everyone to fall asleep.Of course it’s not always sunshine and rainbows with children. I understand the child/children may have bad days, cry for their mom and/or dad, throw toys and balls around or at each other, so when it does happen I put the child/children on time-out or when they get sad or upset I will ask if they need a hug, if they’d like to do something like playing outside or watch a movie to make them feel better.I always explain to the children, when it comes to behavior and feelings, why we do or don’t do certain things and try to have them put themselves in other’s shoes to see how if they would like it being done to them.I also have an older niece (16), to which my family say I practically raised, that has Asperger and my patience is extremely high.Lastly, though English is my main language I do know simple ASL if needed to speak with children, such as play, ball, eat/food, milk, water, I love you, and so on.
