**Seeking Two Reliable Respite Caregivers for Occasional Long Weekends**

We are seeking two dependable, patient caregivers to provide in-home respite care for our adult son, Kirin, in Spring Lake, North Carolina.

Most assignments will be long weekends occurring approximately once every two months, generally from Thursday in the late afternoon through Monday evening. There may also occasionally be a need for coverage lasting up to one full week. Some occasional daytime respite hours may also be available between trips.

Because continuous coverage is needed while I travel, the selected caregivers will work together as part of a consistent respite team. Specific shift assignments will be worked out after both caregivers are selected, based as much as possible on their availability and preferred hours.

Shifts will generally be 12 hours but may be shortened to approximately eight hours if a third caregiver is available.

Caregivers must remain awake, attentive, and available throughout their entire scheduled shift, including daytime, evening, and overnight hours. Sleeping or napping while on duty is not permitted.

**About Kirin**

Kirin is an autistic adult who is mostly nonverbal. He is most comfortable at home with his familiar routine, electronics, preferred foods, and activities. No outings or transportation will be required.

His daily care needs are fairly straightforward:

* Prepare approximately one simple meal per day, along with snacks and drinks.
* Provide minimal bathroom assistance, primarily cleanup after bowel movements.
* Make sure his phone, tablet, headphones, and other electronics remain charged.
* Maintain his normal routine and provide attentive supervision.
* Remain awake and responsive throughout the entire shift.

Working with Kirin can vary depending on his mood and the day, so caregivers must be flexible, calm, observant, and able to adjust their approach as needed. Strong de-escalation skills are required, including the ability to remain composed, recognize signs of increasing frustration, reduce demands when appropriate, and redirect situations without escalating them further.

Strong attention to detail is also essential, particularly regarding his routines, electronics, food and drink preferences, communication cues, and changes in mood or behavior.

Another adult son will also be in the home but is independent and requires no care. Kirin’s father lives locally and may visit or check in during the respite period.

We have cats in the home, so applicants must be comfortable around cats.

For safety, accountability, and household security, the home is monitored by security cameras 24 hours a day. Applicants must be comfortable working in a monitored home environment.

**Required Innovations Waiver Enrollment**

Applicants must either:

* Already be employed as a respite worker through an agency authorized to provide NC Innovations Waiver services, or
* Be willing to complete onboarding with an authorized Innovations provider agency.

The agency will conduct its own hiring process, background checks, and required onboarding. Training is required but is completed online, arranged by the agency, and paid by the agency.
**Compensation**

The Innovations provider agency will pay approximately **$16 per hour** for authorized respite hours.

I will privately supplement that amount as follows:

* **Additional $10 per hour from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.**
* **Additional $15 per hour from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.**

This brings the total compensation to approximately:

* **$26 per hour during daytime and evening hours**
* **$31 per hour during overnight hours**

The private supplemental portion will be paid directly in cash.

**What We Are Looking For**

The ideal caregivers will be calm, dependable, patient, observant, flexible, skilled in de-escalation, and comfortable supporting an autistic adult with limited verbal communication.

Reliability is extremely important. Travel plans will be arranged at least one month in advance, so caregivers will receive plenty of notice before each assignment. However, once flights, lodging, and other travel arrangements have been booked, the dates generally cannot be changed.

Applicants must be certain they can honor the shifts they commit to and should not accept an assignment unless they are confident they will be available. Last-minute cancellations could result in an entire trip being canceled, so we are specifically looking for caregivers who take their commitments seriously and communicate promptly if any concern arises.

Experience with autism, developmental disabilities, direct support, respite care, caregiving, behavioral support, de-escalation, or awake overnight work is strongly preferred.
